Hash House Harriers Tartan

The Quest for a Kilt of Our Own

History of the Project

Beginning in March 2008, a group of kilt-enthusiasts from all over began developing a tartan that could be worn proudly by hashers anywhere and everywhere. The project has thus far received enthusiastic support from hashers in countries as far-flung as Scotland, Iraq, and the USA.

Development of several designs took place, with open discussion happening on
HashSpace through the Society of Kilted Hashers group. It was agreed upon that the design should be based on the tartan of the 93rd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Regiment, the tartan used by A.S. Gispert.

The colors chosen for the tartan designs give a nod to the thrill of the hash:

GREEN (shiggy to snag you)

BLUE (water to wade through)

BROWN (mud to crawl through)

RED (the inevitable blood on the trail)

WHITE (flour to lead us onward)

     …and of course,

GOLD (the lovely lager that is our quest)

A plethora of hashers visited the HashSpace discussion and weighed in on the designs. At last, two were chosen as the favorites amongst all presented. The favored designs were registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority (STA) under the names Hash House Harriers Hunting (Design 1) and Hash House Harriers Trail (Design 2). Please read more about each design below.

Hash House Harriers Hunting

This tartan closely resembles the original 93rd Highland Regiment tartan in its main colors. Hunting tartans are traditionally darker in color and of a practical bent: the colors are easier to keep clean, and they allow the wearer to remain more easily camouflaged in the shiggy. (This was important back when people actually hunted in hunting tartans.)

Hash House Harriers Trail

This tartan uses the same pattern as the original 93rd Highland Regiment tartan. However, its colors reflect the true nature of the hashing trail: a plethora of shiggy and mud, a water-crossing here, a bloody wound there, a trail of flour to lead the pack on-on, and beer, glorious beer, as the golden sun in the sky of hashing. Such colors also appeal to the bolder hasher in all of us!
